Guilt tripped to “Love Your Neighbor?”

“the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself.” — Matthew 22:39

One of the verses that is commonly preached – yet often the emphasis is on loving others…ultimately conveying the message that “the bible says you have to love others”.⁣

Danger happens when not all the words in a passage are not taken into consideration. In this case, common emphasis on “loving others” – has led many devoted and sincere believers to exhaustion, burnout or even bitterness. Not to mention the false burdens and responsibilities guilt tripped upon people.

The Bible promises that God’s Word sets us free. As I pondered upon this verse for decades – I realized that if we don’t first learn to love ourselves, how are we able to truly love others?
